Gum Grafting New York City

Healthy gums are thick and pink, serving as a protective barrier for the underlying bone of your jaw. When gum recession occurs, your mouth’s natural defense against bacterial infection and trauma is weakened. In mild occurrences of gum recession, treatment may only require modifying dental hygiene habits. When severe gum recession occurs, a patient may undergo gum grafting. SmilesNY offers gum grafting in New York.

What is Gum Grafting?

Gum grafting is a procedure to correct advanced gingival recession. When gum recession is severe, no amount of meticulous dental hygiene will correct the condition or prevent bacteria from accessing the underlying bones of the jaw. In order to correct the condition and prevent further recession, a thin piece of tissue is taken from another area of the mouth (typically the roof of the mouth or from a nearby area of the gum) and applied to the area where the gum is receding through a simple surgical procedure.

How is Gum Grafting performed?

At SmilesNY, your gum grafting procedure will be performed by our on-site periodontist, Kevin Loshak D.D.S.. Before the procedure, the affected areas of your mouth will be numbed using local anesthesia. Dr. Loshak will then take healthy grafts of tissue from inside your mouth and transfer them to areas where severe gum recession is present. The new grafts of tissue will be held in place with sutures. Over a period of healing, the graft will permanently seal itself to the gum, resulting in a healthy and functional gum line.

The procedure for gum grafting is relatively short – usually 30 to 60 minutes, depending on your individual case. Sutures will be removed approximately one week after the initial procedure.

What are the benefits of Gum Grafting?

Gum grafting prevents the threat of bacterial infection and further recession in patients with severe gum recession. The procedure is predictable and reliable, providing excellent long-term results. Other benefits of gum grafting in NYC include:

  • Reduced sensitivity to hot and cold foods/drinks
  • Restoration of the original gum line contours
  • Improved appearance of the mouth and smile
