Crown Lengthening

Crown Lengthening New York

Crown lengthening is a simple surgical procedure to expose more of the tooth so it can support a filling, crown, or other dental restoration. SmilesNY offers crown lengthening in New York City.

What is Crown Lengthening?

Crown lengthening is a simple, commonly performed surgical procedure to remove excess gum tissue and/or bone to expose more of a tooth. In many cases, decay or trauma to the tooth can result in a tooth or teeth that are broken below the gum line. Crown lengthening can adjust the gum line around the affected tooth, enabling it to support a dental restoration.

When is Crown Lengthening necessary?

Crown lengthening is often performed when there is not enough tooth showing above the gum to support a filling or a crown. In order to place a filling or a crown, there must be a sufficient amount of tooth exposed. If there is not, a periodontist may need to remove gum tissue or bone.

How is Crown Lengthening performed?

Crown lengthening is a simple oral surgery performed by our on-site periodontist, Kevin Loshak D.D.S.. The procedure is performed in-office using local anesthetic.

During the crown lengthening procedure, incisions will be made in the mouth and excess bone and gum tissue will be removed. For many patients, enough of the tooth will be exposed after simply removing gum tissue. For others, bone tissue will need to be removed as well. In this case, the bone surrounding the tooth will be contoured to appropriate proportions. After the desired amount of tooth structure is exposed, the gums will be repositioned and the area will be cleansed and sutured.

For a few days after your crown lengthening surgery, you will be restricted to a soft food diet and need to take care when brushing your teeth as to not harm the area. Most patients require only a mild pain reliever like Tylenol or Advil following the procedure and feel fine after a few days. A post-surgical visit will be scheduled for one week after the procedure to check on the progress of your healing.
