Boost Your Heart, Mind & Oral Health With Our Periodontist In New York

GingivitisAdvanced stages of gingivitis is well-known for increasing the risk of heart disease. A bacterial infection, periodontal disease can spread through the blood stream and effect other organs, clog arteries, and increase your chances of developing heart disease by 50%. Recently, studies have found that periodontal disease may also increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

StJohn Crean—dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Central Lancashire in England—is the lead researcher in a dementia study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. He found an association between the bacteria found in the gums of periodontal disease patients and the bacteria found in the brains of Alzheimer’s Disease patients. Although causation cannot be determined, Porphyromonas gingivalis, the bacterium in periodontal disease, was found in 4 out of 10 brains of Alzheimer’s Disease patients. Zero out of 10 healthy brains displayed this bacterium. Crean is looking forward to further research on the subject to explore this bacteria and its connection with Alzheimer’s Disease.
